I’ve been thinking about publishing a blog ever since I retired a few months ago. I’ve been shamed into it by two things. The first is that my son has beaten me to it, and with his wife has started an Anglo Japanese take on life in India. But what really crystalised it for me was a report in the UK’s Sunday Times newspaper of September 9 2007.
I really couldn’t have found a more apposite article to show what this blog is all about.
I learn with an air of total disbelief, that one of the proposals from the Conservative party’s Quality of Life policy group is to abandon the well understood, and internationally recognised GDP (gross domestic product), as the main measure of the nation’s success. It is suggested that this should be replaced with something called the HPI index, or Happy Planet Index. Something which will include happiness in a measure of national success
Just what planet do the Tory party think they inhabit these days? Why am I not surprised to further learn that this big idea comes via Friends of the Earth?
